i-GAMING LAW NEWS: Malta's i-Gaming Industry ... a Success Story

Tanti-Dougall & Associates, Advocates through Dr Michael Tanti-Dougall, Senior Partner, and Dr Mario Calleja, Associate, partecipated at a seminar on i-Gaming held on Thursday 2nd June, 2011 and organised by the Institute for Professional Development. The seminar's venue was at the Corinthia Hotel St Georges in St Julians and was well attended by representatives of leading service providers and licensees in the i-gaming industry in Malta.

Presentations made during the seminar addressed important aspects pertaining to the i-gaming industry particularly the Maltese experience on online gaming regulation as well as a service provider's perspective of the local scenario. Other topics included the applicable incentives such as the fiscal advantages available in Malta for information technology including digital games productions spearheaded by Malta Enterprise, a critical but objective analyisis of the EU Green Paper on Online Gambling and a detailed appreciation of the juridicial development of the industry through various i-gaming related case law decided on the European scenario.

The Remote Gaming industry in Malta is regulated under the provisions of the Remote Gaming Regulations (L.N. 176/04) following the establishment of the Lotteries & Gaming Authority in 2003 under the Lotteries and Other Games Act (Chapter 438 of the Laws of Malta).

Malta enjoys some 280 registered remote gaming companies and 400 licensees making it the most successful jursidiction in Europe with almost € 50 million in tax revenue for 2010.
