Thursday, 13 January 2011 15:14

German Chancellor Angela Merkel arrived in Malta on Monday 10th January for a brief visit that included talks on European politics and the state of the euro.  It was the first visit by the Chancellor to Malta.  Merkel met Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi and President George Abela in Valletta, the capital city of Malta. The Chancellor emphasized the resilience of the Maltese economy and noted that large number of German companies now operate in Malta with an  estimated 50 German companies choosing to set up their head office on the island.  The introduction of the Euro in 2008 as well as Malta’s stable economic environment have all contributed to Malta weathering recent economic troubles that plagued many European countries as well as contributing to the steady increase in companies operating in the financial services sector.
