Dr Michael Tanti-Dougall, Senior Partner and Dr Rebekah Tanti-Dougall, Associate at Advocates, Tanti-Dougall & Associates participated at a half day conference entitled ‘Maritime Careers Day’ which was held on the 4th September, 2014 at the Grand Hotel Excelsior, Floriana.

The conference was organised by Wilfred Sultana & Associates, publishers of the prestigious and leading maritime publication ‘Yachting in Malta’ which this year has reached its 10th Edition as well as of the business aviation publication ‘Touchdown Malta’. Wilfred Sultana has been synonymous with the yachting industry in Malta for many years.

The successful event was well attended by many stakeholders in the maritime industry including leading shipping companies such as Malta Motorways of the Sea Limited [part of the Grimaldi Group] and Wilhelmsen Lines Malta Limited, maritime related services companies such as Tug Malta Ltd, AML- Atlantis Management as well as the Bunkering and Marine Unit within Falzon Group of Companies, maintenance and repair companies such as Melita Marine Group and Palumbo Malta Shipyard, together with the Merchant Shipping Directorate within Transport Malta, the International Council of Marine Industry Associations [ICOMIA], the Society of Naval Architects & Marine Engineers [SNAME], the Armed Forces of Malta [Maritime Squadron], the International Transport Workers’ Federation [ITF], the Maritime Pilots in Malta, the Continental Shelf Department within the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure, the University of Malta, MCAST as well as the IMO International Maritime Law Institute [IMLI].

Dr Rebekah Tanti-Dougall, an IMLI Master of Laws graduate, participated on a panel of expert speakers which discussed the theme,’ Investing in the Future’ within the maritime industry, and she delved into various issues emphasizing the attractive legal and fiscal framework Malta can offer making it a natural choice for ship owners to register their vessel as well as to carry out any maintenance, repair and paint works especially for super yachts, the efficiency of our judicial system to safeguard the rights of those involved in maritime claims including the procedures leading to a court order for the arrest of ships, and the need to safeguard Malta’s reputation as an international maritime hub which enjoys one of the leading and most respected shipping registries, offering much maritime related job opportunities.

Indeed, with over seven hundred [700] registered vessels, the Malta Shipping Registry is deemed to be the largest in Europe and the seventh largest world wide.
