i-GAMING LAW NEWS: New Gambling Duty Act by the Isle of Man for 2014

Sunday, 27 October 2013 19:15

On New Year 2014, The Isle of Man's Gambling Duty Act 2012 which received Royal Assent back in October 2012, will come into force subject to its approval by Parliament, it has been announced on 25th October, 2013.

The new Act which provides for a more homogeneous legislation, will allow for further innovative development in the fast-moving industry which is deemed to be much important for the economy. Intended to replace the former general betting duty, pool betting duty and online gambling duty with a single duty of excise called "gambling duty", the new Act would repeal and replace various provisions contemplated in the Pool Betting (Isle of Man) Act 1961, Betting Act 1970 and the Online Gambling Regulation Act 2001, which address the relevant duties.

The Isle of Man's Gambling Duty Act 2012 will not deal with machine games duty, lottery duty on National Lottery games, or land-based casino gaming.

The liability for operators of the new gambling duty under the new Act should remain the same even though, according to some players on the market, the new provisions are designed to be more flexible, and consequently, better to deal with technical developments.
